El cirujano es un médico que extirpa o repara una parte del cuerpo del paciente mediante cirugía en un hospital. El cirujano, además de operar, suele hablar con el paciente antes de la intervención quirúrgica y tranquilizarlo, explicándole por que se ha de proceder a la operación, los riesgos que tiene, los posibles resultados y el postoperatorio que tendrá. Los cirujanos también supervisan los cuidados del paciente tras la operación. Se especializan en un campo de la cirugía, incluida la cirugía general y digestiva que es una de las especializaciones más amplias. Precisamente durante 2017 la lista de especialistas con presencia en Redes Sociales está liderada por uno que es cirujano digestivo, el Dr. Antonio de Lacy, uno de los mejores del mundo en su campo.
Las Redes Sociales son una revolución en la comunicación del siglo XXI, que permite a los médicos estar en contacto con toda la comunidad científica desarrollando proyectos profesionales comunes y hablando sobre situaciones que se dan en su profesión sin intermediarios. También permiten ese tipo de interacción con sus pacientes.
Internet permite una comunicación más veraz a pesar de lo que se pueda pensar, antes el monopolio era de los medios que podía generar alarmismo a su antojo como se demostró en el caso del Gripe A, sin embargo ahora el médico y el cirujano puedan dar su versión de forma directa y los usuarios de Internet prefieren consultar la fuente más veraz y formada. La comunicación, en el sector sanitario abren un nuevo espacio profesional a los médicos y posibilitan un soporte para ampliar la colaboración, el aprendizaje e intercambio de opiniones, posibilitando la creación de redes sanitarias y grupos de trabajo.
También hay que tener atención al uso de las Redes Sociales con un excesivo afán comercial como ha sido el caso de una polémica en los dos último años sobre como determinados cirujanos plásticos explotan las imágenes de pacientes en plataformas como Facebook, Instagram y Snapchat para lograr más audiencia y convertirse en auténticas estrellas de Internet.
